SUMMARY:Native Plants: Seed Saving and Sowing
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Seed Project at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center\, in partnership with the Androscoggin Valley Soil & Water Conservation District for an event on seed saving and sowing! We will focus on how to process native perennial seeds to prepare them for winter. We will also learn about the diverse plants that grow here in Maine and their unique seed collection and seed sowing processes. Wild Seed Project will guide a hands-on exploration of the many steps of growing native plants from seed\, and establishing diverse landscapes using seed-grown plants. \nWe’ll explore the Nutrition Center garden grounds (if weather allows) to identify native plants you may (or may not!) recognize and demonstrate ecologically-responsible seed collecting practices for those plants. Then participants will get to practice winter seed sowing themselves inside. Wild Seed Project will teach us the best practices for keeping your seeds outside for the winter. Each participant will sow two pots of seeds! One to take home\, and one to leave at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center\, to expand the biodiversity around the community space. \nThis program will also introduce AVSWCD’s new Conservation Landscape Certification Program.  This free voluntary program was designed to help landowners complete the steps needed to improve their properties for wildlife\, pollinators\, water/soil quality and overall ecosystem support all in an easy-to-follow checklist! \nAfter the workshop\, stick around to ask questions\, talk with staff\, peruse helpful resources\, and grab some free garden goodies!  We’ll have seeds\, gardening books\, seed kits\, garden tools\, and an opportunity to win a free rain barrel!  Snacks and refreshments provided. We look forward to seeing you there! \nThis event is funded by a grant from the Davis Foundation. \n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please email: nell@wildseedproject.net\, projectdirector@androscogginswcd.org\, BBartlett@stmarysmaine.com or amcconnell@covh.org \n\n\nReservations are required: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfyoN8Wuoeo4zi40w5-txzPB6fMp3yRB3dU4eql1N0XJ3QVEQ/viewform

This project is by\, for\, and of\, members of Lewiston-Auburn and needs your voice and ideas to bring it to life! \nTO REGISTER \nTo Register for the Event CLICK HERE  \n(https://forms.gle/dFxqaNYhizUNAhHk7) \n  \nBE A CREATOR! \nInterested and excited attendees at the learning session can sign up to be part of the Steering Committee\, a group of 5-10 people who will define the cooperative business purpose\, its future ownership structure and what criteria need to be met to become an owner. Members will help determine how decisions are made\, create a business plan\, register the business with the state\, finance and fundraise\, as well as attract member-owners and customers! Stipends for this work will be available. \n  \nBE AN ADVISOR! \nOthers who want to help advise and steward the project can sign up for the Advisory Committee\, a group made up of people with diverse skills and lived experience who will assist the Steering Committee through the business development process\, and provide expertise and guidance.  \nFOR MORE INFORMATION \nFor more information email the CFC Support Team at LewistonCFC@gmail.com or call the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center at 207-513-3848 and leave a message indicating your interest in joining\, or learning more about the Community Food Center development. \n  \nBACKGROUND \nThe vision for the Community Food Center emerged through the multi-stakeholder Local Foods Local Places Community Planning process that took place in October 2019. A feasibility study conducted by the Cooperative Development Institute (CDI) and the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center solidified the initial vision. In May 2021\, the City of Lewiston was awarded a $30 million HUD Choice Neighborhood grant to increase the quality of life for Downtown communities. The Choice Implementation plan designates space for the Center on the ground floor of a new 60+ multi-unit housing structure to be built on Pine Street next to Kennedy Park. The CFC is a part of the overall plan to enhance the health and wellness of the community.

SUMMARY:Glean with Us!
DESCRIPTION:Come lend a hand\, help a farmer\, connect with community members\, and have some fun!  All are welcome to join us and the Androscoggin Gleaners as we harvest vegetables to reduce food waste and increase access to good food at Whiting Farm in Auburn!   This is a great activity for families\, work teams\, youth groups\, and any interested individual. \nWhat is gleaning?  Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from a farmers’ fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. Gleaning helps to save fruits and vegetables from becoming food waste\, and can help increase access to good food when gleaned produce is donated to a food pantry – which is what we will be doing with all our gleaned food!  Gleaners will often help with other farm tasks as requested to maintain the reciprocal relationship of generosity. Whiting Farm has a new program this year called ‘5 Fields for Families’ in which 5 acres of crops are all grown to be donated to food insecure families. \nOn October 6th\, please bring: \n\nLayered clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather\, and that which you don’t mind getting dirt/muddy\nWork gloves if you have them\nFull water bottle\n\nRSVP is requested\, but not required.  We hope you can join us! \n \nThe Androscoggin Gleaners are a local group of volunteers started in 2018 that on a regular basis during the harvest season coordinate with local farmers\, food pantries\, and volunteers like YOU to set up gleans in the local region. Want to learn more? Connect with the Androscoggin Gleaners on Facebook\, by email: androgleaners@gmail.com\, or by phone: 207-370-1061.

Facebook Event \nSnow date is Tuesday\, February 20. \nThis photo exhibit by Brendan Bullock documents some of the many people working to address the persistent problem of hunger in our communities across the state.  The exhibit speaks to the issue of high food insecurity in Lewiston-Auburn and across the state and efforts that try to close the hunger gap with local food – emergency food programs such as ‘Mainers Feeding Mainers’ at Good Shepherd Food Bank\, Maine farmers\, gleaning programs\, and small food self-sufficiency programs such as cooking and food-preserving. There are also suggestions for how community members can take action – including signing the L-A Community Food Charter. There is also an interactive art wall where the public is invited to leave their own words\, art\, or photos that relate to thier experiences with/reactions to the pervasive issue of hunger and food insecurity\, and how you envision your role in creating change.  This marks the first time the exhibit will display in Lewiston-Auburn. \nThe exhibit will be on view at the Atrium Hall Gallery at the University of Southern Maine Lewiston Auburn College from January 16 to February 23\, 2018. The Gallery is open M-F\, 8:00AM- 4:30PM and Saturdays\, 9:00AM-3:00PM. Please check the Atrium Gallery website FMI: https://usm.maine.edu/atriumgallery
